The diya was a deep red. Mini had drawn neat dots on it in yellow and blue and green. She had drawn wavy lines under the dots. Mini had stuck a small stick in the middle of the diya. The stick was a shiny gold colour. When night fell, Mini put her diya on the veranda. Then she called everyone to look at it.

In the dark, the stick shone and glittered. Sparks danced out of it.

‘Ooh!’ they all said. ‘It’s beautiful!’

‘Doesn’t it look like a sparkler?’ Mini asked them.

‘Oh, yes,’ Amma said.

‘Yes, it does!’ Baba agreed.

‘It’s the prettiest, shiniest sparkler in the world!’ Manoj said.

Mini smiled at them. ‘My Friend Anika says that too!’
